A.K. Waugh Limited was founded by Mr. Archibald K. Waugh (pictured above) in 1940 to capitalise on his experience with Fuel Oil heating, gained with another famous but now defunct Glasgow company, Archibald Low Ltd. At the beginning of the Second World War he approached the Petroleum Board, comprising Shell, BP and Esso to supply small oil heaters for the War effort. Successful in obtaining an Order for several units, this was the start of the business which continues to this day.

During the 1950’s and 1960’s A.K. Waugh Ltd. held a range of important patents, some of which will be published on this website in future.

Archie Waugh was only the second person to be admitted to Honorary Membership of BCEMA (British Combustion Equipment Manfacturers Association), in 1977. (BCEMA changed its name in 2004 to ICOM)

Following Archie, his son Billy and later Bruce joined the company, taking it through the boom years of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Bruce left the company in the early 1970’s to successfully pursue other interests away from the engineering world. His contribution to the company is marked here.

Andrew Waugh took over from his father Billy Waugh in 1988 and is the third generation of the family to run the business.

We are proud of the fact that many of our heaters are still in use after over 40 years. Typically these heaters have never required spare parts nor servicing, a testament to the quality and skill with which they were manufactured. We maintain an active database for equipment aged up to about 40 years (currently 1980) which is advantageous when looking for spare parts. Older data is preserved either on paper or as scans available for quick retrieval.

Onwards and Upwards!

With our 78th year in business in 2018 the opportunity arose  to merge with another long-standing Glasgow based business.

Succession planning is extremely important for any business, and the decision was taken to assure the future of A K Waugh in the form of becoming a division of Cormac Engineering Ltd.
Cormac Engineering is a family business like A K Waugh and the Directors of both companies view the merger as a natural fit – albeit Cormac is a significantly larger operation. A further upside is that both businesses operate in many of the same fields, so integration is  advantageous for each, and to the customer who now has a one-stop solution available.

For 2021 we are servicing some of our more distant sites, New Caledonia being one – about as far away as it’s possible to be from Scotland!.

Since the UK departure from the EU in January 2021 we have quoted work in numerous export regions and look forward to expanding our output to serve these customers.

Finally, we work to ISO9001:2000 and have done so for some years.

We supply spares for virtually all types of Duncan Low (DUNLOW) heaters.
